Well, I kind of liked this one. The cinematography was beautiful. I loved the countryside and the hills and the cairns and even the gray skies.

And after a couple of awkward attempts earlier in the season to be socially meaningful, they finally got something right: “This is what happens when you can understand what everyone in the universe is saying. Everybody just sounds like children.” And, of course, "Time to grow the Hell up."

And that was a pretty cool and different monster. I loved those weird, fiber-optical, blue-striped tentacles. :Ahhh:

I also got a kick out of Bill and the Doctor arguing about who knew more about the lost Roman Legion. I wouldn't be so eager to argue with an immortal Time Lord.

And Missy has been released-- to do maintenance on the TARDIS's engines? That's kind of weird. And can she really be redeemed? In a mere two episodes? Because that's how many we've got left. And the John Simms Master returns next week. I'm going to make a prediction: Missy does not come after John Simms-- John Simms comes after Missy.

I realized that I don't think we've ever seen the Master regenerate. And wouldn't it be sad and ironic if the Doctor brings Missy close to redemption, only to have her regenerate into the craziest of all the Master's incarnations.

I think I already knew that she was leaving with Capaldi. I wonder about Bill, though. It would be a shame if the poor kid was out of a job because other people are leaving.

I'm curious about the complicated regeneration, though. I've heard it said that we're in uncharted territory because the Doctor is past the usual limit on regenerations. Maybe we'll start to see more hints of the psychological aspect of regenerating, or him gaining more control over it. Or maybe he'll cycle through a bunch of bodies before settling on one, like Romana did that time.

Whoa... that was an awesome opening half, very much like one of the old serials in construction. Very much looking forward to next week.

Missy and the Master are both fantastic. They spoiled something with the trailer for the episode but there's another major reveal that I should have seen coming in hindsight but completely missed the clues.

That opening was something. Though like Jim said the trailers did spoil too much of what should have been face-slapping surprises. I was surprised that Bill's weird friend turned out to be the Master though  . They also tied this into the original series in a great way with the old-timey Cybermen and the parallel Earth. That was quite a cliff-hanger at the end with Bill really being screwed.
Probably the best episode of the season so far.

I agree with other comments I've seen around the Web in that the Mondasian Cybermen are very creepy.

Yeah, lots of great stuff in this episode. There were a couple of great fake outs with Missy-- first, her identifying herself as "Doctor Who," especially after that opening teaser of the Doctor regenerating. I thought, holy crap, my joke is coming true. I also got a kick out of that whole conversation of his real name being "Doctor Who." Has he ever before been referred to Doctor Who in the context of the show, aside from wordplay? And then the second fakeout, when Bill's friend was asking her about remembering being there before, I was thinking that she wasn't really the Master at all, but a future regeneration of the Doctor and Doctor Capaldi was in denial because he got Bill killed or something. But, no, Bill's friend-- who really reminded me of Zathras from B5-- was actually the John Simms Master. That was really surprising, because they must have been friends for several years.

I loved the concept of time running differently at one end of the ship from the other-- I mean, it really would have been atomized if it were that deep into the gravity well of a Black Hole, but it's a nice twist for a Space Opera. I didn't like the Doctor flipping the blue guy. That's the second time this season that the Doctor has been physically violent and I don't approve of that at all.

So this is not really the return of the old-school Cybermen-- this is the origin of the old-school Cybermen. And Bill seems to be the first. "I waited for you. I waited for you." :(

I really hope that Bill doesn't die. Maybe the Doctor will use his regeneration energy to save her. Or maybe Missy will.

That didn't bother me too much. The 3rd Doctor was known to pull some martial arts on people.

Really? I didn't follow the show much at all before Peter Davison and I don't think I've ever seen him in any kind of a fight. It was very jarring these two times.

Dammit! You beat me to it. My friend and I jokingly referred to the Third Doctor's style as "Who Fu".

Yes, definitely.

- Wotan states that "Doctor Who is required" in "The War Machines" (first doctor).
- Someone refers to him as Doctor Who in "The Gunfighters" when he's using a different alias and he says that's right.
- He uses Doktor von Wer (German for Doctor Who) in "The Highlanders".
- Signs as Doctor W in "The Underwater Menace".
- Bessie's number plate was WHO-2 for the Third Doctor, WHO-7 for Seventh Doctor.

And a few others from audio, prose, etc.
